The Laconia Pumpkin Festival runs Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23 and 24. For those two nights the downtown social district gets bigger. It reaches out along Beacon Street West and Beacon Street East and stays open an hour later than usual. The City Council approved the change on Sept. 14 in the same vote that approved the festival's temporary traffic order. The two plans were built as one, and that shapes how downtown works that weekend. Where you can walk with a drink, where you can drive and where you can park all follow the same lines this year.
The District Was Built With This Weekend in Mind
The social district opened May 21. Participating businesses could serve drinks to go in designated cups from noon to 8 p.m., Thursday through Saturday. At launch, the participating businesses were Defiant Records & Craft Beer, Local Eatery, Sin Bin, The Candy Bar and Trillium Farm to Table. City Manager Kirk Beattie said others had shown interest. The festival came up even in that first week of coverage. Bordes, one of the people behind the district, told the Laconia Daily Sun he expected it to work well for car shows and "events like Pumpkinfest."
Over the summer the rules shifted twice. On June 8 the council moved the regular closing time to 9 p.m. on every day the district operates. On Aug. 24 it approved the first one-event expansion, for the Sept. 11 Sock Hop. That expansion added Rotary Park and part of the City Hall lot, kept the whole district open until 10:30 p.m., and went to the State Liquor Commission for final review.
Pumpkinfest is the second expansion, and it reaches farther along the street grid than the first.
Two Maps, Mostly Overlapping
At the Sept. 2 Special Events Committee meeting, members discussed extending the district along Beacon Street West so Hector's could take part. They also discussed running it along Beacon Street East to Rotary Park, leaving out the City Hall parking lot and the parking garage. Line those boundaries up against the city's traffic order and the festival's parking page, and you can see how the edges fit together.
| Location | Cars | Social district, Oct. 23–24 |
|---|---|---|
| Main Street/Pleasant Street municipal lot | Closed from 1 a.m. Friday | Friday food trucks, live music and beer tent |
| Veterans Square, Main/Church to Pleasant | Closed from 1 a.m. Friday | Pumpkin tower site |
| Beacon Street West, Pleasant/Veterans Square to Water Street | Closed from 1 a.m. Saturday | Added for the festival so Hector's can take part |
| Beacon Street East | Open to through traffic | Added for the festival, out to Rotary Park |
| City Hall parking lot | Open, shuttle stop | Excluded |
| Parking garage | Open, municipal parking | Excluded |
The festival marks Main, Pleasant, Hanover, Canal, Church, Beacon Street West to Water Street, and Veterans Square as pedestrian-only. Every other road stays open to vehicles. On Beacon Street West, the district expansion matches a street that is already closed. Beacon Street East works differently, and that is where planning matters most.
The Seam on Beacon Street East
Beacon Street East stays open to through traffic during the festival so drivers can reach the City Hall lot. The lot is also one end of this year's new shuttle. A bus runs every 15 minutes between Laconia High School and City Hall. The festival map marks the shuttle pickup and lists the last shuttle at 10:30 p.m.
So on the same block of Beacon Street East, the social district runs to Rotary Park, cars are still moving, and shuttle riders are getting on and off. The district leaves out the City Hall lot this time. For the Sock Hop it included part of that lot. The committee also noted that Public Works will need to coordinate signs and postings for the new boundary. In practice, that means finishing your drink before you head to the shuttle.
The everyday rules still apply inside the bigger boundary. Drinks have to stay inside the district and in authorized cups. A cup from one restaurant can't be carried into another. At launch the district's edges were marked with orange tape on the ground. The beer tent is run by an outside vendor, 405, as it was last year.
Friday Is the Soft Opening
Friday runs from 4 to 10 p.m. in the Main Street parking lot. Parks and Recreation Director Amy Lovisek told the council it will have food trucks, beverage tents, three live bands including Meatloaf's band, and a dinner train leaving from the Laconia Railroad Station at Veterans Square. The pumpkin tower will be standing Friday, but it won't be lit until Saturday evening.
The Colonial Theatre has its own Halloween-week show that night. "Bat Out of Helloween" is on the calendar for Friday, Oct. 23. The 10 p.m. district closing applies Friday too, so downtown holds together as one walkable evening from the lot to the theater.
Saturday, by the Clock
Vendors start setting up at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. The festival opens at 11 a.m. The Runaway Pumpkin 5K and 10K run the same day. Both courses have views of Lake Opechee, there's a Kids Fun Run, and proceeds benefit the WOW Trail. Here is the rest of the day as Lovisek laid it out for the council:
- 11 a.m. Pie-eating contest.
- 11:30 a.m. Kids' costume parade and contest, from Hanover Street to the pumpkin tower.
- 2 p.m. Dog parade and costume contest.
- 2:45 p.m. Stein hoisting. The steins hold water, and the winner gets glassware from Boston Beer Co.
- 3 p.m. Rubber duck race, new this year, run as a joint fundraiser with the Belknap Mill. Winners get cash prizes.
- 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Wicked Witches of the Lakes Region dance performances.
- 5:45 p.m. The 34-foot pumpkin tower is lit.
- 8 p.m. Laser show. The tower closes afterward.
- 8:30 p.m. 50/50 raffle winners announced.
- 8:45 p.m. A free screening of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at the Colonial Theatre. Tickets are handed out that day, first come, first served.
- 10 p.m. The festival closes. Shuttles run until 10:30 p.m.
During the afternoon there's also a cornhole tournament, the Stormbirds Belly Dance group is back, and four bands play: Miles to Memphis Band, Supernothing, Canyon Lights and Everway. The organizers are renting this year's race ducks from the Meredith Lions Club. Proceeds will go toward buying the festival's own ducks, so future races can raise money directly for Pumpkinfest and the Belknap Mill. A ticketed raffle at the information booth splits its proceeds with Celebrate Laconia. The 50/50 raffle benefits the Greater Lakes Region Children Fund.
The 8:45 screening is the reason the 10 p.m. district closing matters on Saturday. Under the regular 9 p.m. closing, the district would shut down partway through the movie. With the extension, it stays open until the festival itself closes.
"Pumpkinfest, 25 days away, I believe. Getting close, getting nervous. It's going to be great." Amy Lovisek, speaking to the Laconia City Council
Getting In, Parking and Getting Out
Temporary Traffic Order 2026-14 takes effect at 1 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23. That's when the Main/Pleasant municipal lot and Veterans Square close. At 1 a.m. Saturday the larger closure starts. It covers Pleasant Street from New Salem to Main near 574 Main, Beacon Street West from Pleasant and Veterans Square to Water, Canal and Hanover from Main to Beacon East, Main from Beacon East and West to New Salem, and Church from Main to Beacon East. The library-lot entrance from the Church Street lot also closes. If you usually park overnight downtown on Friday, move your car before 1 a.m. Saturday.
Parking is easier than in a typical downtown week. The festival says street parking is free and two-hour limits won't be enforced during the festival. Municipal parking is on Beacon Street East, in the parking garage, and in on-street spaces downtown. Accessible spaces are behind the train station and in the municipal lots. The city's order is narrower. It suspends the two-hour limit in the Commercial Core Parking Overlay District during event hours on Saturday. If you're parking Friday, treat the usual limits as still in effect.
Streets reopen in two stages Sunday, Oct. 25. At noon, Beacon Street West, Canal, Hanover, Main and Church reopen, along with the Main/Pleasant lot except the beer-tent section. Pleasant Street and Veterans Square follow at 2:30 p.m. The order lists Monday, Oct. 26 for the beer-tent section of the lot. The district expansion and the 10 p.m. hours end with the festival. Council approved both for this event only.
